Japan To Lead Rule-Making In FTAAP: Foreign Minister

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Japan will lead efforts to create high-level rules on investment and trade to pave the way for the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP), Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said at an international conference in Tokyo on Thursday.

Kishida made the remarks in a speech at the 19th International Conference on The Future of Asia.

Referring to strained relations between Japan and China, Kishida said: "We are both responsible for bringing peace and stability to the international community. Japan is always open to dialogue with a neighbor."

Kishida also mentioned plans by the government to relax visa requirements for tourists from member countries of the Association of Southeast Nations and to deepen cultural exchange between Japan and Southeast Asia.
