Next IMF Chief Should Not Be Western: ASEAN Secretary-General

TOKYO (Nikkei)--ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan said Thursday the next International Monetary Fund managing director should not be North American or European.

Speaking at the Future of Asia conference in Tokyo, the Thai national insisted that East Asia should and could put a candidate forward, even if the candidate does not get the job.

The conference is organized by The Nikkei and the Japan Center for Economic Research.
