Trilateral FTA Talks Key: Foreign Ministry's Sugiyama

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Japan should cooperate with the international community to work on more open relief and reconstruction efforts, which would benefit Asia as a whole in the future, Shinsuke Sugiyama, director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a forum in Tokyo on Thursday.

Speaking at the Future of Asia conference, co-organized by The Nikkei and the Japan Center for Economic Research, Sugiyama said he hopes to conclude a trilateral investment pact between Japan, China and South Korea and begin negotiations on a trilateral free-trade agreement.

Referring to visits to quake-hit areas by the leaders of Japan, China and South Korea, he stressed the importance of cooperation in Asia and said the countries of the region should show an openness to one another.
