U.S. Should Be In East Asian Trade Zone: Singapore Ex-PM

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew said Thursday that the U.S. should be included in any future East Asian free trade zone.

Speaking at the Future of Asia conference in Tokyo, the nation's first premier said that China acknowledges that the regional free trade sphere continues to expand and that the U.S is the key trading partner to the region, owing to its technological prowess, strong presence in the global market and robust purchasing power.

The conference is organized by The Nikkei and the Japan Center for Economic Research.
