TOKYO (Nikkei)--A former head of Indonesia's disaster reconstruction agency stressed Thursday the importance of international cooperation in disaster rebuilding efforts.

Speaking at the Future of Asia conference in Tokyo, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto shared his nation's experience and lessons learned from the colossal earthquake and tsunami there in 2004.

Indonesia's Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Executing Agency was set up in the tsunami-ravaged state of Ache to facilitate reconstruction. Kuntoro said the agency also helped eliminate political influence and corruption.

He also underlined that reconstruction drives should be made in parallel with efforts to achieve economic growth.

The conference was organized by The Nikkei and the Japan Center for Economic Research.
