Friday, May 21, 2010

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Korn Chatikavanij, Thailand's minister of finance, conceded during a keynote speech at a Tokyo forum Friday that anti-government demonstrations and the Thai government's subsequent crackdown have paralyzed the nation's capital.

He said the violent protests, led by those sympathetic to ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, have destabilized the country's political situation. He characterized their impact as far from insignificant.

The minister spoke at the Future of Asia forum, which is sponsored by Nikkei Inc. and closes the same day.

Titles of speakers, names of companies, etc., were correct as of the time when the forum was held.
