TOKYO (Nikkei)--Takashi Shiraishi, president of the Japan External Trade Organization's Institute of Developing Economies, said that urbanization in Asia is increasing.

"As the economy expands, Asia will enter an era of urbanization. Asian cities will see a population explosion and income disparities widening," Shiraishi said during a panel discussion at the 16th International Conference on the Future of Asia on Friday.

Shiraishi also indicated that disparities between the rich and poor would linger despite the region's continued economic expansion, pointing out that Asian countries will face a challenge in addressing the issue.
