TOKYO (Nikkei)--Laotian Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh said Thursday he will support efforts to create an "East Asian community," a concept championed by Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.

At the 16th International Conference on the Future of Asia, hosted by The Nikkei through Friday, he said cooperation among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as Japan, China and South Korea, is likely to play a crucial role in realizing that goal.

He added the leaders of these countries and regions should aim to create an ASEAN community by 2015, paving the way for the establishment of the East Asian community.
