China Needs To Stress Good Foreign Relations: Lee Kuan Yew

Thursday, May 20, 2010

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's minister mentor, said Thursday in Tokyo that it will become increasingly important for China to maintain good relations with all countries.

That is because China's economic growth has come to depend on steady imports of energy and other resources, Lee said at the 16th International Conference on the Future of Asia, which runs through Friday.

China used to be able to secure almost all its energy and other resources for sustained economic growth at home, but this has become increasingly difficult due to the rapid growth it has achieved over the past 10 to 15 years, according to Lee.

For this reason, China will need to give top priority to building and maintaining good relations with all countries, going forward, to secure these needs, he added.
