U.S. Forces Bring Peace, Stability To Asia: Lee Kuan Yew

Thursday, May 20, 2010

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's minister mentor, said at a Tokyo forum Thursday that the U.S. military presence in Asia ensures peace and stability in the region.

If the U.S. military base in Okinawa is closed, it would be difficult for American forces to deploy in the region, he said, adding that would not be in the interests of Asian countries in general.

It is necessary to balance China's military power with that of the U.S., and it is important to provide a counterweight to China's growing military presence in the region, Lee said at the 16th International Conference on the Future of Asia, which runs through Friday.

Titles of speakers, names of companies, etc., were correct as of the time when the forum was held.
