TOKYO (Nikkei)--Cooperation within the ASEAN region is essential for Asia's continued growth, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said Thursday at a Tokyo forum.

In a speech at the 16th International Conference on the Future of Asia, Nhan called for political dialogue and concerted action, saying measures currently being implemented separately by each country on policy interest rates and foreign exchange markets could, though they work in the short run, eventually lead to conflicts between countries.

Referring to the political turmoil in Thailand, the deputy prime minister of the country currently chairing ASEAN expressed hope of having an opportunity in October to discuss the matter with other ASEAN members.

Titles of speakers, names of companies, etc., were correct as of the time when the forum was held.
