TOKYO (Nikkei)--The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) is playing an earlier-than-expected role due to the financial crisis, said Toshihiro Nikai, minister of economy, trade and industry, here on Friday at the annual Future of Asia conference.

ERIA was jointly established by Japan, China, South Korea and ASEAN in June 2008.

"Industries in various countries are showing strong interest in ERIA's activities," said Nikai. "We hope to nurture, in cooperation with other Asian countries, the institution into an entity with a significant presence."
