TOKYO (Nikkei)--Large-scale Japanese-led infrastructure development projects and institutional reforms across East Asia will result in a "great economic leap" in the region, said Hiroyuki Ishige, Japan's vice minister of economy, trade and industry, at an international forum here Friday.

Speaking at the annual Future of Asia conference, the official cited a Japanese project to construct a 1,500km-long high-speed freight railroad jointly with India as one such key undertaking.

Ishige said he hopes that Japanese efforts to facilitate such infrastructure as ports, roads and industrial complexes in India will lead to the development of globally competitive manufacturing sectors there and create jobs for young people.
